Sunrise Alert

This week has been quite warm and sunny. On Wednesday we got a bit of rain overnight, but otherwise it’s been hot and dry, especially so at work. The building has air conditioning but the AC has “issues”. Where I work it’s been pretty comfortable, but upstairs, not so much. Some afternoons it was over 25 degrees (80F) in the office. It’s almost like the air conditioning was just moving the warm from us to them. They had the technician out a couple of times to look at the system. Finally on Thursday the front office sent out a note saying in part “They have figured out what the problem is and the part is in stock. They have ordered it and will be back in a few days to fix the AC once and for all.” OK but if the part is “in stock” why did they have to order it and wait a few days?

I think the heat is driving some of the engineers over the edge. Now, some of the robots we build have lights. We used to use incandescent bulbs but we are converting to LED because they are brighter and more reliable. Anyone that’s bought an LED flashlight can attest to that. This week I overheard one of the engineers say “Man I like working with these LEDs. Incandescents are from the dark ages.”

The irony is strong in this one. And they wonder why I walk around here with a smirk on my face so much of the time.

But the heat is not just impacting those of us who work for a living. The dry weather is driving wildlife out of the high country down to the coast where people live. We came across this story of a lady that came face to face with a cougar in her back yard.

This was only about a mile from our house.
Then there was the guy who was going fishing near Port Alberni and a cougar wanted to go along.

We’re keeping a careful eye when we go out. Fortunately this year my garden consists of a pot of lettuce on the deck so I don’t have to got too far each morning. I did mow the front on Thursday but I was more in danger from the heat than anything else.

On the science front, here is the reason I don’t go swimming in the ocean or even lakes.

These were native to BC waters. Oh sure, they’ve been extinct for 500 million years but who knows what else might be out there. I’ll stick to pools, walk on the beach in shoes, use SPF 10,000 sunscreen, and wear eye protection when I crack an egg.

But I am not neurotic!

And finally we ran across this designer in Vancouver.

He calls it Straight Line Designs which is funny because almost nothing he does has straight lines. We love his furniture, especially the Grandfather Clock, the Squiddy Round Tables, the Little Black Dresser, the…oh we just love nearly everything he does. Some of them have an almost Dr. Seuss feel. Check him out.
