Island Life 19 July 2015: Sand Castles

This week they announced that the island and coastal regions of the mainland were in a level 4 drought. This means no outside watering at all. No washing of things like cars and such at all. We should try to minimize water use so we’ve been washing dishes by hand, reducing the number we’re dirtying, and skipping showers. The bad part is that it’s only the middle of July. I don’t like to think what it’s going to be like by the end of August.

But we are dealing with things. The blackberries are starting to come in. It’s still early but it looks like we’ll have a decent crop. The yard is brown but so is everyone else’s. Actually as far as yard work it’s not really making much of a difference. I tried to not be out in the sun doing things anyway. The only issue is that we have another load of mulch to put down. As I’ve mentioned we lay down newspaper, wet it in really good, and then put the mulch on top of the paper. Right now we can’t put the mulch down because we can’t water it in.

Friday, Marsha went to another Nanaimo Pirates baseball game.  It was a double header, so I joined her for the second game.  They split the doubleheader with the Coquitlam Reds. On Saturday, we decided to head up to Parksville to see the sandcastles. They have a festival every year though I haven’t been there for a couple of years. It was fun. The artists are always so amazing. The theme this year was Heroes and Villains

It was a very pleasant day. they were having an art show and sale in the park. Tents were set up under every tree and bush with artists, jewelry makers, photographers, and such.  We shopped and looked at all the pretty stuff but didn’t buy. so, all in all it’s been a warm, summer week. There was also a kite festival so a we saw lots of kites flying around too.  However we did not get any pictures of them. We haven’t had too much smoke this week as the wildfires nearby seem to have settled down. The water restrictions haven’t bit too hard. And the sunrises have also been beautiful.
