Mid Week Addendum: A Very Bad, No Good Day

We just got back from the Vets where we had to put Geiger down.

We took Geiger into the vet this morning to have his teeth cleaned. This afternoon we heard that there had been an “anomaly” on the X-Rays. The vet investigated further and found that Geiger had cancer in his jawbone. Later scans showed it was in the lungs and elsewhere. There was really no option. The prognoses was grim, lots of pain and few options for treatment. In dogs this sort of cancer usually happens in the limbs. It tends to be found sooner (limping) and they can amputate the effected leg or paw. With cats it tends to happen in the jaw, where it can’t be removed. The cat also tends to work around it and so by the time it becomes noticeable to the owner it’s metastasized all over. That was the case with Geiger.

We were with him when they administered the drug and it was over within seconds. They we had about half an hour with Geiger to say goodbye. In a couple of days they will call us and we will be able to pick up his ashes. We will spread his ashes in the garden. When he was on the deck he loved to look out on the garden and watch the birds and squirrels and rabbits and raccoons and other cats as they wandered through the yard.

It’s going to be a quiet night.
