Three Arrivals

You may remember, a year ago I got a cataract in my right eye. OK yes, a lot of other things happened since then, but it all started with a cataract. No problem, cataract surgery is a simple, routine procedure, or at least it was supposed to be. Long story short; between surgical errors, miscommunication, and chemo I’ve spent the last year with a pair of glasses that actually should have been replaced before the cataract surgery. Unfortunately all of that had to wait until everything else was resolved. For a year now I’ve been struggling along with a pair of glasses that were totally wrong for the right eye, and weren’t really right for the left one either.
It hasn’t been a lot of fun.
But this week I turned a corner. I got new contacts. I went with contacts because with one eye at 20/40 and the other at 20/1000 glasses would produce images of different sizes and I’d always have double vision. Contacts on the other hand have much less of this effect so I get proper binocular vision. I can see again.
I’m sure the other drivers on the road will appreciate this.
The thing is, now I need reading glasses. I’m finally over the hill.
Sure I needed help with seeing close up before, but I had bifocal contacts. Then for the last five years no-line bifocal glasses. I never needed actual reading glasses. Now I do which s a bit of a bother. I keep trying to convince myself that I look like John Young on the first Space Shuttle flight, but it isn’t helping.
Maybe if I had his hair.
Now before I spend much on reading glasses I want to try a few different powers to see what is optimal. This is the advantage of having a Dollar Store just down the road. I picked up a bunch of cheap reading glasses at different powers and I'm trying them all to see which one works the best.
And no I don’t feel like Fred Sanford at all.
Once I find the ones that work the best I’ll go get a more expensive pair. I don’t expect them to work any better mind you. It’s just that the ones that end up at the dollar store are by definition the ugliest glasses on the planet. I’m currently wearing a pair to write this that have the most horrible, awful, totally disgusting brown turtle-shell frames you have ever seen. I can’t imagine anyone actually going out in public in glasses that look like this. Oh, wait, yes I can. These were the frames I wore growing up.
That explains a lot.

Friday, Naomi, a friend of Marsha’s from college, and her husband stopped by. It was a visit full of surprises. First they pulled up in a silver Prius. Parked next to our two Prius’s the driveway suddenly looked like the Prius Store. A little while later we were on the deck chatting. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. We could see across to the mainland. A few birds were circling in the blue sky. And we could hear rain falling on the roof. Surprising and weird. We had dinner at the Lantzville Pub. When we were leaving someone in the parking lot asked if he could take a picture of the license plate. His daughter collects photos of license plates and it was the first one they'd seen from South Dakota, (Marsha's friends drove here. The Prius is a great long distance car.). Then we wandered on the beach for a while and about sunset we said our goodbyes and they headed off to Victoria. The biggest surprise happened when we went inside and found it was after 9:00. We had no idea it was so late. Welcome to the longest day of the year. But it was nice to chat and catch up.

And last, but certainly not least, let me introduce you to the newest branch on our weird family tree. My cousin Mario and his wife Robyn had a baby. Her name is Aria. Aria Eliza. She arrived in the usual way and all are doing well. Mario is quoted as saying “Together Robyn and I created a beautiful song,” hence the name. I think it’s actually quite pretty.
