Canadian Law

Overall it’s been a good week. Rehearsals for the play have been going on and we’re starting to work off-book. Thursday we got through most of Act 1 without resorting to the script. We all felt really good about that. Not bad with five weeks to go before we open. I made it to work every day, though I did shorten a few days so as to not overdo it. As Marsha has pointed out, I need to be careful or I’ll hurt myself which would be a setback. Actually, I told them at work I’m less worried about hurting myself, than what Marsha will say IF I overdo it and hurt myself. On Thursday my boss replied that he was less concerned with me hurting myself and more worried about what Marsha would do to HIM if he let me hurt myself.

I suspect I may have overused the joke. (Perhaps, MGA)

The other thing we’ve been working on this week is preparing for our citizenship tests. As such we’re reading material and taking practice tests. We both have been running 80-90% and getting better with each test so we’re pretty confident. We’d be getting 100% more regularly but it seems that on each test they throw in a few odd questions. For example:

What do you mark on a federal election Ballot:
1: The person you want to be Prime Minister.
2: The person you want to represent you in Parliament.
3: The person you want to represent you in front of the Queen/King.
4: An X.

The answer is 4: An X.

Really?!? An X? That’s what you want? Seriously?

But otherwise the studying is going well.

All this studying has resulted in our developing an interest in Canadian Law. Relax, it’s just temporary. In another week we’ll be back to avoiding any legal questions if at all possible. Anyway they were having a discussion on the CBC about consensual acts. Specifically what can you consent to and what you can’t. The law professor said something we found very interesting. In Canada you can consent to anything with another adult as long as it does not result in bodily harm. You can consent to give away your car. You can consent to go on a date. You can consent to whatever you want, UNLESS someone will get hurt. Actual harm is a crime even if both parties agreed to it beforehand. Fight Club would be illegal even in Canada. However the professor went on to point out that Canadian law has an exception. You can consent to go to a bar, and if a fight breaks out and you voluntarily join in, whoever hits you can be charged with assault. However if you play hockey and a fight breaks out nobody will be charged. That’s right, hockey fights are protected by Canadian Law. What’s more it appears that only straight on fights are protected. Blind side hits, hitting from behind, using the stick, and other ‘cheap shots’ are not protected and players have been prosecuted. However if two players square up, drop the gloves, and whale on each other until; they are both a bloody pulp, the worst they can look forward to is a few minutes in the penalty box.

Canadian law is weird.

We’ll let you know next weekend how the test went.

PIX 1: Monday-At work even the crates were still asleep. 2: Mid week-Mike's boat needs work. 3: Saturday-Welcome to spectacularly beautiful November afternoon.
