A Day at the Beach

Happy Labor Day weekend to everyone!

Doug and I are heading to Barbara's for supper this evening.  Barbara is going to make the prawns that Dave had given us. Thought we would get a quick email out before we left for the evening.

Last week I only worked on Monday and then had the rest of the week off. Barbara and I went for a walk down at Pipers Lagoon and saw a number of jellyfish along the shore.  I had never seen any jellyfish like these before. They had a beautiful caramel colour to them.  Barbara and I were looking at our first one when a lady came over and said if you want to see a real big one - I'll show you. So we went down the beach a bit and saw a huge one. I made Barbara stand in the picture for scale.  The next picture is a close up of the outside part of the jellyfish. It was very beautiful. I wish I could have done something to save it, but between being worried about being stung and having no idea how to move it - we just left it there. I did save a few starfish that had gotten stranded up on the beach.

I also had lots of time to pick blackberries. I have about 12 more quarts in the freezer. Doug is worried we will have too many, but I think it will be a nice treat to take them out this winter to add to a bowl of ice cream or vanilla yoghurt. Yum!

For all of those Gilligan Island fans out there - there was an article in one of the local newspapers that the SS Minnow is now at home on the Island. One of the owners of Quality Foods bought the boat back in 2006 and is almost done with restoring it. The owner is talking about not only using it as a promotional tool for the store but may also offer 3 hour tours to help raise money for local charities.  We'll have to keep an eye out for it.  Right now it is in dock up in Nanoose just north of Nanaimo. Although  there were a number of replicas used during the filming of Gilligan Island - this one is the one used for the opening credits of the show setting out from a port in California.

So another month gone by in our Island paradise. We are still waiting for those visitors to arrive. Doug's Mom is due on Monday, September 22 and will leaving on Friday September 26. Doug has taken most of the week off to spend time with his Mom. We are looking forward to the visit.

Enjoy the weekend and be safe!
