Canada Day and Other News

One of the people I know at the office stopped by this week o chat. He mentioned there was a robbery in North Vancouver, and his cousin happened to be there when it happened. The robbers entered per usual but shortly after, one of the customers took action. Apparently this guy had a Black Belt in all sorts of disciplines. He quickly subdued the robbers and even threw a bottle through the passenger window of the getaway car and took out the guy driving.

"This guy was like some kind of Ninja, and you know Ninjas are like modern day Jedi Knights."

That's just wrong on so many levels, George Carlin would have loved it.

Tuesday is Canada Day. Leave it to the Canadians to have their national holiday coincide with the beginning of the fiscal year. A very practical people these Canadians are... The Canadian flag seems to be appearing everywhere this week. Of course they don't celebrate with fireworks like in the US. I think the traditional way of honoring Canada Day is to sit down with your neighbor over a cup of tea and chat about how things are going.

On Saturday we went to Pipers Pub and saw my cousin Mike perform. He had two other guys with him. He did a lot of bluesy material. It was good though we had never heard most of the stuff before. We were there until a bit after 10:00 and then we took Barbara home. What was surprising was that the place was nearly deserted. By the time we left there were only five people in the Pub, including the three of us. I guess with the big holiday weekend most people either left town or stayed home and grilled.

The Sunday morning we had brunch with Barbara, and Mike. Mario and Robin were there as well. They had come over to the island for a quick weekend visit. The meal was great, waffles, fruit and bacon. Later Mike was showing off his newest guitar. I finally discovered a group of geeks that rival computer geeks. Musicians seems to get into their equipment as much as my hacker friends.

"Check this out it's a DH-12L with the wide sound opening."
"Duuuude, that is sweet. Is that a rosewood back?"
"Yeah but it is Himalayan rosewood, not Brazilian. Brazilian would have pushed the price up by a couple thousand."
"Dude!"
and so on. I had no idea what they were talking about most of the time. Maybe this is what Marsha feels like when I start discussing Core2/Ubuntu/C++/BSD/SUDO DSCHMOD/etc.

No, I'm not anything like that, ever.

Geiger escaped three times on Saturday. Marsha had him out in the back yard while she was working in the garden. The neighbors cat came out and they eyed each other through the fence. No problem. Then Marsha looked back up and he was gone. She looked around and caught him coming back through the fence. She blocked the hole but a few minutes later he was gone again. This time she couldn't find him so she came in to get me

"Doug, I lost Geiger."
"What do you mean you lost Geiger. Where is he?"

Thereby entering me in the final round of the Stupid Statement of the Week contest.  We looked around for about 10 minutes until I found him. After that we decided he was going to be under House Arrest for the remainder of the weekend. We put the heavy webbing guards over the screens and left him to look forlornly through the mesh at the outside. Later Marsha, who was still working in the garden, looked up and saw him out in the yard again. He had managed to force the guard to one side and squeeze through. He was captured, in the other neighbors yard this time, and locked up again. He is a slippery one.

We are in the traditional One Week Each Summer When It Gets Hot. For the next few days it will be in the upper 80's to 90. Then it will break and we will be in the 70's for the rest of July and August. This is why we don't have AC here. There is no point when 51 weeks of the year you really don't need it.

We finally got our camera in the mail, Thank you Suzi. Here are some hilights from our trip

This is why the drive out was such a epic journey. This plus torrential rain, 40mph headwinds, downed trees, tornados, power failures, and flooding. 4.jpg
