We Finally Have Rain

Although it is too late for some of my plants. The deer in search of some nice green succulent food have totally stripped the leaves off of my hydrangea and peony plants. I never had problems with deer eating these plants in Minnesota, but apparently island deer have different taste buds.  We got rain this weekend, which was very welcomed. It was a nice soft rain and our dry lawns and fields readily soaked it up, which means we may have to mow later this week. That is the one nice thing about a dry summer, the grass goes dormant fairly quickly. Now if only the dandelions would do the same.

Doug actually had this weekend off as his office co-worker was back from his holiday.  Weekend off - well that meant we hit our list of weekend chores.  The first is power washing the side of the house and the back gutters.  This had been on our list since we bought the house so it was nice to finally check it off as completed. Since we had the power washer for a few hours we also washed our deck. Boy Doug and I were sure surprised just how dirty the deck was. We scoured off several layers of accumulated grime. We had thought the deck surface was a medium brown. Now all you see out the back door is the glare from the sun bouncing off the white deck.

This morning prior to the rain Doug and I went down to Pipers Lagoon, so this week's pictures are from our trip there.  Walking along the ocean is a great way to start a Sunday morning.  Yesterday, Barbara was over for dinner and a movie. We saw Fantasia 2000.  We had been talking about the original Fantasia and Barbara had mentioned she had never seen the updated version. She still likes the original version better, but it is a fun film to watch.

I'm not sure if I had mentioned this before, but Doug and I have signed up for a box of vegetables to be delivered to our house each Sunday. We have been having fun with the deliveries so far and decided to extend our membership.  Last week they put in some beet greens. The thing is that Doug absolutely positively hates anything beet. He won't even buy beet sugar. However Barbara loves them so I just delivered the greens to her. As of right now the box for this week has not yet been delivered. Last week besides the beet greens they also included mustard greens. We put them in our salad and was quite surprised by the zing they added. We also had purple carrots which looked very strange but tasted wonderful.  Which reminds me the deer also ate my pepper plants too. They were very destructive this week. Geiger gets so excited and 'twitchy' when they are browsing close to the house. We've started talking about turning him loose to go after the deer. I think he would start off well but he doesn't realize just how big deer really are. It would be a surprise for both of them and interesting for us.

The BC Lions won this weekend. The score at half time was 17-6 and Montreal was doing everything right and the Lions were doing everything wrong. It was a late game so at half time I feel asleep. Next morning when I checked the score I was very surprised to see the Lions managed to win.  The winning field goal came with only 9 seconds left to beat Montreal 36-34.

Well that's it. Take care, enjoy life and we are still waiting for those visitors.

Not sure what makes these strange circles in the sand - so if anyone has any ideas?

You can see how dry the grasses are in the area. We are on a high fire alert right now and watering restrictions.
