Another Quiet Week

This week I finally finished out next big project; painting and crown moulding.
But I'm not going to talk about that right now.

I had to have some work done on the car and the funniest thing happened.
Nope that got bumped from this weeks letter too.

Instead the story starts on Thursday. I had to go into the shop at 3:00 because of some network problems and...
No wait, I'll talk about that in a future edition as well.

Because of the early start I was able to leave early. Why is it when I start two hours before I'm scheduled I only leave 30 minutes early. But I digress. When I got home Marsha was ready to take off for a job fair. Now I was more in the mood for a nap but she really wanted me to go along. So we headed for Parksville and...
How about we skip that trip. It turned out the one in Parkesville had been rescheduled at the last minute and so we drove up and back for nothing.

Anyway by the time we got home we just had time to grab some lunch and head out to this other job fair Marsha wanted to attend. Once again I wasn't really in the mood to go but Marsha really wanted me to. They were having a drawing for a free laptop computer and she figured that two chances were better than one. So I went. We wandered around for half an hour, Marsha got a few leads. I got the card of the editor for the local paper and I'm going to be writing him about doing some freelancing. Then we left.

This is where the story gets interesting. As we drove away from the Job fair Marsha casually said, "You know you haven't been to the SPCA here. How about we stop so you can take a look. We're going to drive right by the place." We pulled into the place and walked in. They had cats. Lots of cats. Two whole rooms full of cats. Cats on shelves. Cats in lockers, Cats overhead and underfoot. Big cats. Little cats. Friendly cats. Spooky cats that just gave us a look that said "I vant to be alone". One cat, two, cats, red cats, blue cats. well ok not quite but you get the idea. In the second room we saw a little mostly white calico female. She was the same age as Geiger but 30%-40% smaller. We petted her for a while and I don't know if it was the long hours, or what, but before I knew what happened I was handing my debit card to the person at the counter and we became owners of the little white cat. Yes it's true, we have two now.

Once home the first item of business was a new name. The SPCA had an identifier for her but "XM13927-F "Hey Stupid Get This One" doesn't roll of the tongue. After a few false starts we settled on Momiji. OK I can hear you right now "What the heck is a Momiji?". Well Momiji is the Japanese word for Maple Leaf. At least that's what I got from my sources. By the way it is pronounced Moh-Mee-Jee. Anyway once we had a name we had to get her acclimated. We closed off the living room and set up food water and a litter box on a rug that we don't care about. The first night Marsha stayed in the room and slept on the couch (I had to go to work on Friday so I got the bed). Geiger knew something was up as he could hear Momiji through the door, and probably smell her as well. Thursday Marsha split her time between Momiji and Geiger, plus berry picking and completing a number of projects. Then Friday night I spent the night on the couch and Marsha got to actually sleep.

Saturday was interesting. We opened the doors. At first Geiger was cautious and seemed to growl all the time. We watched them and there were few problems. Lots of hissing and such. Once or twice they have taken a swipe at each other but nothing serious. Saturday night we locked Momiji in her room again, this time we both got the bed, and she seemed very happy to see us in the morning. Today they have both been out all day and we haven't seen any aggressive incidents. The thing is that Momiji is a tiny cat. If we didn't know she was the same age as Geiger we would have thought she was a kitten. When we took her to the vet (just a precautionary checkup, she's fine) the vet said she was 6 1/2 pounds and because she is a little thin she could go up to 7 but no more. Petite was the word she used. Because she is so small and because she spent the last 4 months in the shelter with cats up to 3 times her size Momiji is very shy. She's stood up to Geiger a time or two when he got ornery with her but she is not pushy in any way. Geiger on the other hand growled and strutted almost the whole first day and he still is growling and occasionally hissing but mostly I think he's curious. Also at heart he is a cowered. He is around 10 pounds but as soon as she stands up to him he runs away. I've told him that if he keeps this up we'll have to change his name to 'The Brave Sir Robin".

So our household has grown. Momiji is settling in. Geiger is getting used to her being around. I think in a week or two they will be friends. Other than that not much happened this week.

Oh and we did not win the laptop.
