Computers, Aircraft & Dishwashers

This week the big item was some major surgery on our old computer. This is where we keep our financial records, computer check register, iTunes music, and such. More to the point it is where we keep the digital pictures we have been shooting. The old machine only had a couple of 80 Gb hard drives which was fine for the last 5 or 6 years but since we got a digital camera it's been filling up fast. Now that we have two it was obvious that the drive was going to be completely full in short order. The nice thing about this model of Macintosh is that there are lots of slots for extra drives. I've spent this weekend setting up the computer from scratch with the new 500Gb drive. This'll last us for a few years.

Did you know that the first airplane flight in Canada happened on Feb 23, 1909 in Nova Scotia? There are all sorts of celebrations this week to commemorate this event. Interestingly the team was headed by Alexander Graham Bell, and his family money underwrote the development of the Silver Dart and Glenn Curtis was part of the team that developed the plane. This was the start of what in the following decades would become Curtiss Aircraft a major player in aviation up through World War II. Oddly enough Bell Aircraft, now Bell Helicopter has nothing whatsoever to do with Alexander Graham Bell. It was founded by a Larry Bell from Indiana with no connection to A. G. Bell.

This weekend we scored a major coup. Last fall our old dishwasher expired. Actually it runs fine, as long as you define 'fine' as water leaking all over the floor and the dishes not coming out clean. Marsha found out that one of the perks of her job at H&R Block is that she gets a discount card from Sears. This weekend they had a bunch of specials running so we went to take a look. We found a nice dishwasher on sale for a good price, plus we got an extra 10% off with Marsha's card and an extra $20 in store discount. We got a really good deal. The dishwasher will be delivered and installed on Saturday. We decided to have them install it. The delivery charge and the charge to dispose of the old appliance are almost as much as the installation charge and the latter includes delivery and disposal.

Today's work at the SuperStore was more eventful than usual.  Prior to me coming to work a customer had fallen and an ambulance had to be called. One of the doors on the cigarette cabinet came off and fell on one of my co-workers and when I was there I had to call a Code Adam. (missing child). The little boy was found my coworker is fine and everything turned out ok, but it was pretty exciting.

We are still waiting for our tax forms. In Canada they have until February 28 to mail the T4 and other forms.
