Fortunately we did not miss any turns and after, I don’t know it seemed like days, we got through Vancouver and across the border.

...In modern times in England and Canada we still give gloves on Boxing Day, but now it’s more typical to give something a little more useful and to everyone.” ... We just stopped by Target and found a bunch of those nylon gloves they sell on sale for 2 for $5 and we made up the rest.

The result was that by Tuesday morning the snow was a very dense, very hard ice mix with points and chunks on top of a glaze of ice.

...What’s more, rather than having two rows of support posts on the outside like the San Francisco Bay bridge does, the new Port Mann Bridge has two massive pillars in the middle between the lanes and cables reaching out to support the roadway.

...You see, on the old bridge, snow would either hang up inside the girders or fall off in small pieces and mostly land on the side of the roadway. ... Snow and ice collects on the massive cables until enough is stuck together, many pounds worth, at which point it slides off the rounded cable and falls down to hit the cars below.

...At a Calgary Hitmen game, a minor league hockey franchise, (The NHL is still on strike much to the disgust of many here in Canada) they do something called a Teddy Bear Toss.

You have to spray twice, once in January and once in February with a mixture of inert oil and sulphur, and then once again in March or just before the buds start popping with just the oil.

...In doing the apple spraying I did realize that I had forgotten to turn off the outside faucets for the winter. ... Back there, as I understand it, if you forget to turn off your outside faucets in the winter they will freeze, your house will explode, AND the city will charge you for the million gallons of wasted water.

...I knew where it went through the wall, so I went inside and the shut off valve was more or less where I expected. ... I just had to reach up through the insulation and brown recluse spiders as far as I could and with the tips of my fingers feel around for the shutoff valve.

...You can’t see it but reach up and if you feel around you will find one pipe has a shutoff valve

...Once they were done I left the faucets open but I made sure to replace the cap on the bleeder line so nothing could crawl in there and clog the system.
