Road Trip Part Two

As I mentioned in last weeks e-mail we took a road trip to visit Ruth in Carson City Nevada. My apologies if you didn't get last weeks e-mail. We recreated the list while we were on the road and my computer was missing a few addresses and had a few wrong ones. I have that letter, along with this one and all previous letters out on our web site.

The trip went well. We left a little after noon and caught the 3:15 ferry to Vancouver. From there we crossed the border and got as far as Bellingham Washington before we stopped for the night. The Prius ran great and aside from a few sprinkles the weather wasn't bad. The next day we drove on down I-5 through Seattle, Portland, and Eugene, before stopping in KlamathFalls. The sun was out and the scenery was beautiful. A bit of snow over the Willamette pass but the road was clear.

The next day we passed through Alturas California and on to Carson City. Once again the high desert was pretty and we really enjoyed the scenery. Travelling along this route was very relaxing.

After a few days in Carson City we headed home. This time we were trying to do the trip in 2 days. We left Carson City at 3:30 in the morning. Back through Alturas and Klamath Falls. This time though we stayed on the east side of the mountains. We passed by Crater Lake, Sunriver, Lava Beds National Monument, Paulina Peak, Cinder Cone, Smith River Gorge, Three Sisters and Bachelor Butte. It was beautiful. We finally stopped for lunch in Madras Oregon (Abby's Pizza, if you're in Oregon give it a try. It's great). Then we pushed on to Portland arriving at 3:30, a very comfortable run. The Prius is a real champ and doesn't show the 5 years and 50,000 miles we've put on it. In Portland we spent the night with my sister.  Jean is a Master Gardener so her yard is beautiful. Her husband Ron has done a lot of work on the house and it looks really nice as well. I wish you could see it

The last leg started the next morning. We set out up I-5 through Washington. We cleared the border surprisingly quickly and made the 12:45 ferry which got us home a little after 3:00. We were able to pick up Momiji and Geiger, unpack, run to the store for a couple items and get to sleep at a reasonable time. The weather crossing the water was cloudy but sailing through the islands is always enjoyable. The sun, the birds, the little islands with houses on them. We do love these trips across the water.

Once we got home we found that the yard was waiting for us. It looked like everything was blooming. The tulips especially were in all their glory. The rhododendrons are coming along very nicely. The peony had even started looming. usually the deer have eaten them by now. Even the apple tree in Barbara's yard is coming along well. It should be spectacular in a couple of weeks just like it was when we got here on the 30th of April in 2007. I took nearly an hour the next day just shooting dozens of pictures of all the spectacular blooms. Not sure what I should do with them though.
