Random Vignettes from a Busy Week
13/06/10 06:47
This was a very full week.
Last Sunday there was some maintenance on the building where the Nanaimo office is located. They had to cut power for the day. Rather than this being a disaster, my boss quite wisely saw this as an opportunity to pull the e-mail server out and take it to Victoria. He'd been wanting to do this but didn't have an excuse for the e-mail system to be down for the day. So early last Sunday morning Marsha and I were at the Nanaimo office. I downed all the systems and killed the breakers. Then pulled the server and loaded it in the car and we headed for Victoria. Once there we installed the server and Marsha and I had a few hours to wander around town before we needed to head back to Nanaimo.
I hadn't seen the Parkside Resort since last fall. The lobby is beautiful with a soaring ceiling and a pond. This was just gravel and dirt when I was here last. I understand they are planning on stocking the pond with small fish later in the year. That'll be really cool. I suggested they go with piranha and electric eels, but with no rails on the bridge they'll probably stick with local fish like trout..

There are also a few surprises buried in the shrubbery in the lobby.

While I was finishing up in the server room, Marsha started exploring the city. She happened to be near the waterfront when music started coming out of speakers up and down the block. Apparently at 10:45 every Sunday morning they perform the "Pickle Boat Dance". I'm sorry I missed it.

When I finished up at Parkside I set out to catch up with Marsha. Along the way I saw something that I found quite amusing. I call this picture "I Don't Care If They ARE Manolo Blahnik's, It's 11:30 Saturday Night And They &!#@%!! Hurt!"

Victoria is a very "arty" town. In the window of a knitting store we saw this; a bicycle cozy. They even covered the brake levers, cables, and pedals. I believe the bike may even be rideable like this.

One thing is for sure though. This is a town that knows how to make a carmel apple

We ran across a street fair. One of the vendors sold natural stone jewelry and fossils. We started talking to him, he seemed to like to talk more than sell stuff, and when I mentioned I was really more of a fossil collector he pulled out his 'private stash'. He kept the fossils that were too big or fragile for jewelry and sold them separately. We picked up this very pretty little Asaphid Trilobite, Trinucleus. It's beautifully prepared and is a nice addition to my collection.

After that we headed back to Nanaimo and I worked into the evening bringing systems up at Nanaimo and making sure everything was working properly.
Tuesday started out very calm and picturesque. At the end of the day though we had to take the cats into the vet for their annual check up and vaccinations. Our vet minimizes the number of shots they get but every once in a while they do need them. They were well behaved, even when the German Shepherd / Great Dane mix came over to say hi in the waiting room. But Wednesday they were both not 100%. They always feel lousy after their shots.

Saturday we went garage sailing with Barbara. Afterwards we stopped for lunch and noticed a new legal office has opened across the street.

This week the rain finally stopped. I think it's because the house they're building behind us finally has a roof. It has poured for the last month while they were framing the place. Literally an hour after they got the last piece of sheathing on the roof it cleared off and has been beautiful ever since. I got this shot of the sun coming through the french doors in the living room. No big meaning, I just think it looks really neat and peaceful.

Finally, today is our anniversary. 23 years of strangeness. We went to the Art in the Park fair in Nanoose where Marsha ordered a beautiful ring with a First Nations Raven motif. Then we went to lunch at Romeo's. We hadn't been their before and it was really good. Some of the best pizza we've had (aside from Abbey's in Oregon). We may have a new favourite place. This evening I ran over to do some plumbing at Barbara's and then tonight we're going to crash early.
And that was it for this week.
